So 2022 has arrived. As we all like to say throughout the month of January every year, “New year, New me”. The idea of a brand new year excites us as we anticipate what we are going to do, what we are going to change, what new niche activity we are going to start and what brand-new lifestyle we are going to commit to religiously (even though, in reality, the only difference between 31st December 2021 and 1 January 2022 is the number 3 and a few words on a page). I would hate to dim your excitement though so, Happy New Year. Yes, it is probably a bit late to say this by the time I’ve published this article but oh well. It’s the thought that counts.
Last year was a year of highs and lows for everyone, COVID put pressure on our lives for the second year running (alpha, delta, omicron…), Megan and Harry gave that tense interview with Oprah about their decisions to change, GB rose to the top at the first COVID olympic games, we witnessed political disasters, we were both a frustrated and proud society, clinging on to the hope of a new year. Life, as the complicated and messed-up thing it can sometimes be, has been difficult yet one thing we can confidently say will never go away is our love and adoration for the world of fashion. As a university society, we are innately biased but ,as fashion always does, it comes back to surprise us and delight us every year - or maybe this will be the year it changes…
As Exeter fashion Society, we asked our members and have collated our 2022 fashion predictions. Everything from feathers to fuchsia, find our list of fashion predictions below: (Warning: certain fashion predictions on this list will cause both extreme joy, disgust and maybe even fear of a certain kind. Read at your own disposal).
1. UGG Boots
To UGG or not to UGG, that is the question. I never thought I’d be writing this but UGGs are back, or so it seems according to the recent trend emerging on social media platforms. These shoes, or should I say these boots, take us back to the early 2000s where everyone from Kim Kardashian to Kate Middleton was seen in a pair of the classic, tan, ankle boots (yes, they had a royal fan club as well). Whether you live for them or loathe them, UGGs are making a comeback in the same way Crocks and Birkenstocks slid back onto the radar in the past few years. What do you think? Are you here for the resurrection of the UGG or do you think we are better of leaving these 2000s beauties sleeping comfortably in the grave?
2. Scarfs
Next on the list is the accessory of all accessories at the moment: the scarf. However, say a momentary adieu to the classic Burberry scarf or neutral staple, this year we are going bold, bright and beautiful when it comes to accessorising. We have all seen that Acne Studio scarfs have been climbing the ranks when it comes to obligatory Autumn/Winter purchases and rightfully so, the crazy colour combinations and new, youthful approach to Winter fashion is here and we (or at least I am) are loving it. In response to the recent appreciation for these colourful scarfs, the high street seem to be upping their game - producing cheaper versions of the trending designer pieces. Have you picked up one of these scarves yet? Are you a fan of colour or do you prefer more classic colour combinations?
3. Platform Shoes
Next on the list: Platform shoes. Platform converse, Bratz boots, Docs and now even Mary Janes have dominated the start of 2022, these shoes appearing on the instagram pages of many influencers and celebrities. Although admittedly very hard to walk in, this sky-scraper shoe style is set to dominate 2022. What do you think? Will we be seeing increasingly chunkier shoes as the year goes on?
4. 2014 grunge
Next on the list is 2014 Tumblr grunge, the style that dominated the early 2010s as we longed to embrace our inner Effy Stonem or Aria Montgomery. Think Smudged black eyeliner, fishnets, ripped tights, Biker boots, dark denim and graphic tees… well, we are going back in time as this grunge girl aesthetic is set to comeback this year. What do you think? Is this a welcomed return or rather a thing of the past?
5. Feathers
From Fur to Feathers. Last year, we finished the year with an obsession with fur hats, scarfs, ear muffs and these things are sure to showcase themselves well into 2022 (because really, is (faux)fur ever out of fashion?). However, one addition to this trend is feathers. Although not at all new in the world of fashion, feathers are making a bold comeback. Whether it be feather tops and dresses or feather-trimmed coats we are sure to see them back on the fashion radar this year. Following the lead of the bags and scarfs, the feathers worn this year are set to be as colourful as ever. Are you ready for this fluffy trend?
So there we have it, our five fashion forecasts for the year of 2022 (Taylor Swift is ready so we sure hope you are too). Comment below your thoughts on these predictions - we would love to hear them.
