Ditch the Micro-trends and make the Switch: The Beginner’s Guide to a Capsule Wardrobe

Micro-trends currently dominate the fast fashion scene, going out of fashion as quickly as they arrive. Micro-trends are created to last only until the end of the season, meaning they are worn only a handful of times before being deemed unfashionable. These micro-trends are mostly produced cheaply and unsustainably, making them widely accessible, but widely damaging to the environment and our bank accounts.

These micro-trends have become even more popular as a result of the increased presence of social media, especially Tik-Tok, Instagram and YouTube, in our lives. Constant ‘hauls’ of clothing and accessories put pressure on viewers to keep up with the latest eye-catching trends. However, these pieces are often produced on such a wide scale that the quality is compromised.

Examples of 2021 Micro-trends:

  • The House of Sunny Hockney dress

  • Crochet outfits

  • Swirl prints

  • Clay/Resin rings

  • Lace cami vests

However, there is a solution to the problems that come with Micro-trends. Making the switch to a capsule wardrobe means you will have wearable statement pieces that can be dressed up or down. These pieces can be paired together in endless combinations, focusing on effortless, chic looks. Helplessly staring at your wardrobe will become a thing of the past.

The switch to a capsule wardrobe begins with finding a colour palette that suits your skin tone, usually a range of neutrals. There are plenty of quizzes and articles online that guide you through a range of factors (such as skin, hair and eye colour) in finding the most flattering colours for your skin tone. A good place to start is this Marie Claire article.

What kind of items should you start investing in?

  1. A pair of flattering, comfortable jeans. Levi 501’s are constantly recommended and a timeless classic.

  2. An oversized blazer. I love my leather blazer, but material blazers are especially easy to buy second-hand.

  3. The £33 black dress. https://hissyfitclothing.com/collections/dresses/products/black-velour-split-maxi-dress

  4. A button-down.

  5. A black mini-skirt. Perfect for summer and winter (with a pair of tights).

  6. Racer-back tank tops. These can be found at super affordable prices and are flattering on everyone!

  7. Chunky knitwear.

  8. Black tailored trousers.

  9. Staple sweatshirt/hoodie.

  10. Black ribbed flares.

Top Tip: When considering buying a new piece of clothing, ask yourself → Will I wear this at least thirty times?

The versatility of these pieces allows you to avoid outfit repeating and, most importantly, is much more sustainable. The fast-fashion industry continues to focus on quantity over quality; brands such as PrettyLittleThing, BooHoo and Urban Outfitters are a few examples of volume-based companies. The impact on the environment and the treatment of workers is yet another reason to begin investing in staple, timeless pieces from eco-conscious brands. Buying second-hand is another option that is more affordable and environmentally friendly as it reuses rather than produces; either charity shops or online websites, such as Vinted and Depop, are great places to start.

Another option is renting clothes, allowing you to get involved with the latest trends, without the guilt of only wearing something once or twice. For example, Swished (visit the website here) allows users to rent an item for up to five days, for a fraction of the price. Moreover, you can earn money yourself by renting out items from your own wardrobe.

We all deserve something that catches our eye every once in a while, so there’s no need to throw out everything patterned and colourful from your wardrobe. However, investing in a capsule wardrobe will mean you never feel like you have nothing to wear again.
